Uttarkashi is a small temple town located at the height of 1158m. The city’s name has ‘kashi’ in it, as the main deity of Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Varanasi was brought to Vishwanath Temple of Uttarkashi when Aurangazeb attacked the Kashi temple.


When the Pandava brothers (Mahabharata) were seeking salvation for the crimes they committed during the war, they sought the blessings and forgiveness of Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva kept running away from them. According to mythology, Lord Shiva took the shape of a bull while running, and parts of his body were scattered as he ran. Therefore, every spot where his body part hit the ground is a shrine.
